Renee Nicole Good, Spotify, Avelo, + Congressional wins, ICE shoots two people in Portland, and a brave Uber driver
It’s hard to believe we are only 8 days into this year. I want to send a big hug to everyone reading this because I know it’s been a hard week. Just know that if your heart hurts, you are not alone. <3
We must continue focusing on the tragic murder of Renee Nicole Good at the hands of ICE. As Trump, DHS, and the right-wing media ecosystem try to spread lies about her and what happened, we must show the truth of what happened, tell the story of who she was, and continue showing up to demand ICE get out of our communities for Good. Because no one is coming to save us but us. And they won’t stop terrorizing our neighbors if they get away with this.
It’s also important, especially during hard times, that we take the time to celebrate our victories. You might have missed the good news during the horrors of this week, but we had two corporate wins with Spotify and Avelo Airlines ending their contracts with ICE and two Congressional wins with Congress taking steps forward to pass the Venezuela war powers resolution and ACA tax credit extension, with some Republicans rebuking Trump to vote with Democrats. This is a reminder that our movement and power is growing and working and Trump is weakening, even with his own party.
TOP THREE THINGS TO AMPLIFY
1. The story of Renee Nicole Good, the mother murdered by ICE in Minneapolis.
On Wednesday, an ICE agent murdered Renee Nicole Good in broad daylight by shooting her in the face as she tried to follow their request to leave. Our hearts break for her family and the community of Minneapolis. As the country reels from this tragedy and new details emerge, there are some key parts of the story to focus on and highlight:
Who was Renee Nicole Good. We must humanize her and tell her story. She was a 37 year old US Citizen born in Colorado and a mother of 3 children (15, 12, and 6 years old). She described herself on social media as a “poet and writer and wife and mom.” She loved to sing and studied creative writing in college. Her 6 year old son’s father died in 2023 and now he has lost his mom as well. You can see his stuffed animals were in the glove box of the car - this imagery is very powerful to share. If there is one thing I would focus on, it is the story of Renee as that is the most missing from the narrative right now.

The truth of what happened. Renee was driving home with her wife after dropping her 6 year old son off at school. They were bravely there exercising their rights to observe the ICE raid in an effort to help protect their community. Some ICE agents told her to leave, but another one started yanking on her car’s door handle. As she was trying to comply with their demand and drive away, an ICE agent shot her in the face 3 times at point blank range, through the windshield and through her open window. While the video footage is difficult to watch, it is very important to share it (with appropriate trigger warnings). The right wing media ecosystem is gaslighting the country about what happened so video evidence that shows the truth to people’s eyes and ears is necessary. We cannot trust the investigation that has now been taken over by Trump’s FBI, who have blocked state investigators from accessing evidence. As always, we should tell the truth of what happened, not spend time amplifying or debunking their lies because repetition of a lie (even to debunk) increases believability. (See this post I co-wrote on the Illusory Truth Effect for more on this).
ICE prevented a doctor on scene from assisting Renee Good. A neighbor on the scene announced that he was a physician and asked if he could go check the pulse. ICE refused to let him through saying they didn’t care and that they had their own medics. An ambulance didn’t arrive for 10-15 minutes and was blocked by ICE vehicles in the street so paramedics had to reach her on foot.
ICE continued their assaults by pepperspraying protesters and high school kids in Minneapolis. The violence and terror by ICE didn’t stop with murdering Renee Good. ICE agents assaulted and peppersprayed students and staff outside Minneapolis high school on Wed afternoon. There is also a video of ICE spraying chemical agents in a protester’s face at point blank range.
Emergency protests and actions have erupted nationwide against ICE. Organic protests against ICE in honor of Renee Good have been happening across the country since Wednesday. Share to make it clear that America will not stand for ICE murdering and kidnapping our neighbors. We want ICE out of our communities.

Join the #ICEOutForGood weekend of action. Indivisible, MoveOn, ACLU, Voto Latino, United We Dream, 50501, and the Disappeared in America Campaign of the Not Above the Law coalition, and a broad coalition of groups across the country are calling for a coordinated ICE Out For Good Weekend of Action this weekend to demand accountability, honor the life lost, and make visible the human cost of ICE’s actions.
2. Major wins this week in rebuke of Trump regime: Avelo Airlines, Spotify, and bills in Congress.
While we mourn and activate, we also deserve to celebrate the wins of our movement. Four major wins that demonstrate a sharp rebuke of the Trump regime, by both corporate entities and centrist Republicans. Share these wins! They are a reminder that, while things feel bleak, the movement against fascism in America is gaining power and momentum and, despite his best efforts to project strength, Trump is weakening.

House Democrats pass a bill to extend ACA premium tax credits for three years with some Republican votes. (Now goes to the Senate)
3. Border Patrol agents shoot and wound a husband and wife in Portland
In yet another escalation, a Border Patrol agent shot and wounded a couple during a traffic stop in Portland yesterday. The details of this story are still developing, but continue showing the trend of federal agents using excessive force.
